On October 31, 2019, state-owned carriers China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom debuted 5G mobile phone services.
China will quickly become the largest provider of 5G mobile phone network by enabling the services in 50 cities, with Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen getting full coverage first.
Some other countries such as the United States and South Korea provided 5G services in certain areas earlier this year. However, according to Bernstein Research, China’s commercial network is the biggest.
"The scale of its network and the price of its 5G services will have a pivotal impact throughout the supply chain," analyst Chris Lane said in a research note.
China Mobile’s 5G packages are priced similar to 4G ones, with the lowest being 128 yuan a month. More than 10 million subscribers in China have already pre-registered for 5G.
Technology giant Huawei especially has provided lots of network equipment for China's 5G rollout and has been talking with several other countries to give them support with the 5G network.
"Given its tight operator relationships in 5G network deployment, and control over key components," according to Nicole Peng, an analyst with research firm Canalys, “Huawei is in pole position to dominate the market.”
However, the United States has blacklisted Huawei, arguing that it poses a national security risk, based on the world’s growing concern for the company’s security threats.
Despite pressure from the U.S., Huawei announced in July that it had signed more than 60 commercial contracts to supply 5G networks around the world, including at least 28 in Europe.
