Since Microsoft left Windows Phone years ago, it is their first time to return to the mobile market. On Microsoft’s annual hardware event, CEO Satya Nadella announced the release of several new dual-screen hardware devices, including the Microsoft Surface Duo smartphone.

Nadella said, “We wanted to put people at the center of every device experience. We wanted to innovate across form and function, especially with a focus on how we can drive the next level of creation and productivity. That led to the first surface of this journey.”

The Surface Duo opens on a 360-degree hinge to two 5.6-inch displays. The users may run a single app across the two panels, and two apps at once on each panel as well. According to Microsoft product chief, the hinge should prevent damage.

“Make no mistake, this product is a Surface,” said Microsoft product chief Panos Panay, “because of how productive you can be on it. We know, scientifically, that you will be more productive on two screens.”

The operating system Surface Duo runs will be the Android system. “We’re partnering with Google to bring the absolute best of Android into one product,” Panay said.

“Over the years, these technologies and this company have together as one to create unique and amazing products,” Panay said. The launches allow the company to get its products out in front of consumers before the upcoming holiday shopping season.
