In April, the Sports company Puma launched its first augmented reality shoe, the LQD Cell Origin Air that allows users to play interactive games and bring the shoe to live with an app called the PUMA LQD CELL.

The limited-edition shoes are available for purchase on its websites and at the selected retailers worldwide for 130 euro per pair (approximately US$ 145). With the act of purchasing and downloading the Puma LQD Cell app which is available on the App Store or Google Play, enables wearers to experience some of the distinctive features of the shoes.

Features

The most unique part of this AR shoes is its QR Code design which unlock a range of virtual features when scanned with Puma’s app. By downloading the Puma LQD Cell app, users can scan the QR code-enabled shoe to play interactive games, as well as access filters and add effects to pictures and videos of the product. For instance, users could see their shoes catch fire, explode into a deconstructed virtual model of the shoe, or be thrown into an AR endless runner game.

Users do not need the physical shoe to activate the features and can also trigger the AR content by scanning an image of the product on a screen. What’s more, besides AR, LQD Cell technology provides “extra cushioning by means of hexagonal Profoam cells.”

Besides the fact that Puma’s augmented reality shoe LQD Cell [pronounced: /ˈlikwid/ /sel/] Origin Air is coated with QR codes that activate virtual features when scanned, the stable cushioning provided by LQD CELL technology makes the shoe extremely comfortable. The original CELL hexagon has been made softer with a smaller and more resilient material. Moreover, the LQD CELL is combined with PROFOAM (energy-return foam) to enhance its performance and make it more stylish.

“LQD CELL Origin AR is PUMA’s answer to a world in which the line between reality and the virtual realm becomes increasingly blurred” said the brand in a statement. Puma’s LQD Cell will continue to add AR experiences and filters, including turning the shoes invisible in the future.
